A staggering 81.5% of the e-challans issued for traffic violations in the first six months of 2024 remain unpaid in Ahmedabad.
According to data provided by city traffic police, 3,99,988 e-challans were issued for traffic violations from January to June 2024, of which a mere 74,094 (18.5%) were paid, while 3,25,894 (81.5%) remain unpaid.
In the six months of 2024, the e-challans issued were to net the state exchequer Rs 41,36,66,650 in fines, of which Rs 34,86,30,650 are yet to be paid by violators.
However, now that the Gujarat High Court has again pulled up the traffic department, making helmets mandatory for two-wheeler drivers and pillion riders, the traffic department has decided to come down heavily on those who do not bother to pay fines.
