The number of missing women in the state paint a completely different picture than the tall claims of ‘women safety’ in Gujarat.
According to data presented by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in the Lok Sabha, in 2022, a total of 5,011 women were reported missing in Gujarat.
While the whereabouts of 24,869 women have been found over three years, 5,011 women remain missing.
As per the numbers, approximately 800 women go missing each month in Gujarat due to domestic disputes, marital issues, mental illness, among other reasons.
A total of 11,817 women went missing in 2020, 13,747 in 2021, and 13,548 in 2022. Over just three years, a total of 39,112 women went missing.
In their defence, the police said that a report is filed with the police when a woman goes missing, but the police are not always informed when she is found, resulting in the case remaining open on the record.
Representatives of NGOs believe that in some cases, women are sent to other states and forced into prostitution.
