The Gujarat High Court levied a fine of Rs. 50,000 on an individual for quashing an FIR filed against him for hurting religious sentiments.
The FIR was filed by the Ahmedabad cybercrime cell against Yash Tiwari for alleged offensive YouTube videos targeting the Arya Samaj last year. The videos allegedly portrayed Arya Samaj founder Dayanand Saraswati negatively. After the FIR and subsequent arrest in November last year, Tiwari, a UPSC aspirant, later reached a compromise with the complainant. Subsequently, the complainant filed an affidavit stating he had no objection to the court quashing the FIR.
With the complainant unwilling to pursue the criminal case, Justice Nirzar Desai quashed the charges against Tiwari. Tiwari will deposit Rs. 50,000 towards litigation costs within a week, after which the FIR will be quashed.
