There has been no change in the rules regarding the driving tests taken at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Gujarat, confirmed the department of road and transport officials. Recently, there were reports about driving tests not being mandatory at the RTO. The reports suggested that with new rules, the candidates would not have to take the driving tests at the RTO, but at the private training centres.
However, according to department sources, no rule changes have been implemented, and the proceedings will continue according to old rules in Gujarat.
Earlier, numerous reports suggested that to streamline the licensing process, the RTO will bring a change of rules, effective from June 1. One of these reported rules stated that government-authorised private testing centres would conduct the driving tests for licences.
According to an official of the office of the transport department, the government has not been given any information from the Centre in this regard.
The 38 RTOs in Gujarat process about 7,500 online applications every day – which is about 27 lakh applications annually – most of which relate to new licences or renewals.
