A prisoner serving a life sentence for murder reportedly killed a 71-year-old fellow inmate within Sabarmati Central Jail on Wednesday morning, as stated by police officials on Thursday.
According to the FIR filed by Ranip police, Bharat Prajapati, 40, currently housed in the Bada Chakkar yard of Sabarmati Central Prison, assaulted Kesha Patel (71) by striking him on the head and face with a brick inside their barrack around 5:30 am on Wednesday. Patel received initial medical treatment at the prison dispensary before being transferred to Civil Hospital in Asarwa, where he succumbed to his injuries at 6:40 am on Wednesday.
It is learned that Prajapati had served as a Lance Naik in the Indian Army and was stationed in Gwalior. During this time, he committed a murder which led to his court martial by the Grenadiers Infantry Regiment, resulting in a life sentence on July 6, 2023.
Prajapati, who has been in Sabarmati Jail since July 7, 2023, retrieved a brick from the bathroom on Wednesday and allegedly used it to fatally bludgeon Patel. Ranip police have filed a murder case against Prajapati and initiated an investigation.
