Since its inauguration in September 2022, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) run Ahmedabad Metro has crossed the 1 lakh daily passengers mark for the first time. The ridership in the metro crossed the 1 lakh mark twice this week on days which were neither public holidays nor match days.
On 14th May, a total of 100,830 people rode the metro, while on May 16th, 100,893 people chose to travel by metro. Both days were regular weekdays, meaning neither there was any holiday nor there was a match in the city that day. It is also noteworthy that the ridership of the metro has consistently remained above 1 lakh on IPL match days since March 24th. However, on May 10th, which was a match day, 159,214 people used the metro service, the highest among all match days.
As per the data from GMRC, the initial average of riders after the inauguration was 39,000 per day, which has been on an increasing trend ever since. Recently, the ridership of the metro on weekdays has remained between 93,000 to 1 lakh, while on holidays this stays between 75,000 to 80,000.
