In a bid to reduce the pendency and ensure speedy disposal of ‘cheque bounce’ cases, 15 new courts are set to open in Ahmedabad under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
As cheque return cases are on the rise, there is a proposal to set up these new courts in the multi-storey building of Apna Bazar in Ahmedabad’s Lal Darwaja.
At present, 12 courts are functioning for cheque bounce cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act at Apna Bazar.
For speedy disposal of the pendency of cheque bounce cases, there is now a plan to set up 15 new courts.
To make the new cheque bounce courts functional, the labour courts and industrial courts located on other floors in this complex have been shifted.
Currently, more than two lakh cases are pending under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act relating to cheque bounce cases in the above 12 courts, and the addition of the 15 will take it to 27.
Apart from private cases, most of the cases are also from banks, financial institutions, and companies.
The setting up of the infrastructure system is underway for the new courts, including judge’s desks, furniture, cabinets to keep court case files and documents, furniture, etc.
The new courts are likely to be set up during May and will eventually start functioning in June.
