Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has encountered a mass copy case for the first time with 39 first-semester engineering diploma students who allegedly cheated in the exams.
During the evaluation of the winter semester examination 2023 answer sheets, similarities in the answer sheets of 39 students were encountered by the assessor.
The first-of-its-kind mass cheating case was witnessed at a government polytechnic in Vyara, Tapi.
“39 students of government diploma colleges have been charged with level-3 punishment. Along with students, the senior supervisor, junior supervisor, and GTU coordinator have been summoned by the unfair means committee on Apr 15,” said GTU accessor Viral Borisagar.
In the first phase, 151 students of degree engineering, diploma engineering, MBA, MCA, and mechanical engineering have been accused of cheating.
51 of them faced level-1 punishment, which involved failing the students in the subject because they were reported of unfair means during any examination.
A total of 16 students faced level-2 punishment (cancellation of all semester exam results of that semester), and 76 students faced level-3 punishment (cancellation of results and being debarred from the one subsequent main examination of the said semester).
Three students have been charged with the highest level-7 punishment, which involves the examination committee deciding the penalty depending on the nature and complexity of the examinee’s involvement.
The unfair means committee will decide the scope of punishment and the university will initiate further proceedings accordingly.
