Three more people have been held today in the stone-pelting incident that took place at Gujarat University hostel in the wee hours of Mar 17.
The incident, which started as a scuffle over performing ‘Taraweeh’, a night prayer during Ramzan, outside the hostel, turned violent when a mob of 20-25 men pelted stones and damaged vehicles.
The Ahmedabad Police had previously arrested two accused, Hitesh Mewada and Bharat Patel. Today, police held Kshitij Pandey, Jitendra Patel and Sahil Dudhatia in this case.
Four foreign students were injured in this incident. According to the victims, who were from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan, and two African countries, the attackers fled the scene as the police arrived.
Based on the viral video, the police identified seven people in the vandalism acts.
A group of students claims that the mob attacked them while they were performing Taraweeh, and started shouting slogans and beating them up. The other side claimed that they were questioning the security staff about religious practices on the campus when a foreign student first slapped them, which led to the clash
