Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has opened Gujarat’s largest government-run skin bank, in collaboration with Rotary Club Kankaria, to aid burn victims and patients requiring skin grafts. The bank preserves skin from deceased donors for use in cases where patients’ own skin is unsuitable due to burns, accidents, or trauma.
Annually, over 600 patients at Civil Hospital require plastic surgery and skin grafts, often depending on their own skin. However, in cases where their skin is inadequate, the bank’s preserved skin serves as crucial “biological dressing.” The hospital will offer counseling services to promote skin donation, akin to organ donation initiatives.
This milestone enhances healthcare accessibility in Gujarat, promising improved outcomes for patients in need of skin grafts.
