The Health minister of Gujarat Rushikesh Patel, stated that a total of 359 organs have been donated in Ahmedabad’s civil hospital in the last two years.
70 organ donations were made in 2022, and 42 were made in 2023. These organs were donated by 112 donors. Out of all the organs, kidneys were donated the most, 199, along with 94 livers, 8 eyes, 4 pancreas, 34 hearts, 4 hands, 14 lungs, and 2 small intestines.
Government efforts to promote organ donation. The state government allocated ₹2 cr for the formation of SOTTO (State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation) in Gujarat. Aid up to ₹50,000 is also provided to the hospitals conducting these organ donations.
A green corridor is also provided with the assistance of the state police for the transportation of organs from one part of the state to another. For maintaining the procurement and storage of the donated organ or tissue under the guidelines for deceased donor organ and tissue transplantation (G-DOT), software was developed under the guidance of NIC (National Informatics Centre) Telangana and NIC Gujarat for SOTTO, Gujarat.
