The startup in Gujarat has experienced an extraordinary surge, witnessing a rise from 565 startups in 2019 to 3,291 in 2023. This has led to significant rise in direct employments — from 6,077 in 2019 to 48,138 in 2023. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Prakash gave out this information in the Rajya Sabha while responding to queries.
Rajya Sabha Member Parimal Nathwani sought specific information regarding the Start-up India initiative, including the number of startups recognised, job creation and the contribution of startups to the Indian economy. Som Prakash outlined the substantial growth nationally, with DPIIT-recognized startups soaring from 10,604 in 2019 to 34,779 in 2023. Direct employment opportunities created by startups across India also surged, from 1,23,071 jobs in 2019 to an impressive 3,90,512 jobs in 2023.
As per the minister’s statement, sustained efforts by the government have led to an increase in the number of DPIIT-recognized startups to 1,17,254 as of December 31, 2023. These recognized startups are reported to have created over 12.42 lakh direct jobs. There is at least one recognized start-up in every state and Union Territory, spread across over 80% of the districts across the nation.
