The National Medical Commission has issued a show cause notice to BJ Medical College and sought an explanation about the less than 75% biometric attendance of its faculty. The NMC had made it mandatory for the faculty of medical colleges to have over 75% attendance to address the menace of ghost doctors in medical colleges and to ensure good education in these colleges.
The NMC had turned a blind eye to some medical colleges that were still not complying with the same.
The low number of faculties in many medical colleges, some medical colleges were showing ghost faculty to shore up their faculty numbers. As a result, NMC introduced the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) for faculty attendance in all government and private medical colleges. Under this system, 75% attendance is mandatory for each of the faculty in each of the colleges and the same is continuously monitored by the NMC.
It was learnt that biometric attendance of faculties in BJ Medical College was found to be less than 75% as was revealed on the NMC portal. The NMC later issued a show cause notice to BJ Medical College seeking an explanation from its management about the same.
