An ‘Irani gang’ has been arrested for stealing from bank customers under the guise of helping by the Surat police. A trio, consisting of a father, his son, and his nephew, has been booked for committing five thefts at Surat’s Athwalines-Parle Point, Mahidharpura-Delhi Gate, and Rander.
The trio, Javed Hussain Irani (50), his son Abu (32), and nephew Aveed Irani (40) have confessed to tricking the unassuming customers who came to withdraw or deposit cash in the bank. They would gain their trust and get away with hefty sums of cash from the victims.
In one of the cases, a woman headed to deposit ₹50,000 in Surat’s Mahidharpura branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) was made to believe it was mandatory to mention the serial number of the notes as per a new rule. The perpetrators then slyly fled with 39 of her 100 notes of ₹500.
In another case reported a few days ago, a farmer was robbed of ₹15,500 while going to the Athwalines branch of the Bank of Baroda. The gang fled with his bundle of notes under the pretext of asking him to check if there were any torn notes. The trio has confessed to committing several such acts of theft in Surat’s Rander, as well as in Mehsana and Palanpur.
