Vali Swaraj Manch, a parents’ association of private schools based in Ahmedabad, has petitioned the state education department to establish a maximum limit for school fees under the Gujarat Self-Financed School (Regulation of Fees) Act, 2017, as opposed to a minimum or cut-off limit.
The existing Act caps the cut-off or minimum fee limit at Rs 15,000 for primary schools, Rs 25,000 for secondary schools, and Rs 27,000 (non-science) and Rs 30,000 (science) for higher secondary schools. The parents’ body argues that certain schools, charging fees below this limit, raised their fees post the Act’s implementation.
