After the Gujarat High Court last month rapped the Ahmedabad police, civic body, and the state government for failing to control the cattle menace, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation in an affidavit claimed that “around 90% of the streets of Ahmedabad city are now cattle free.”
A division bench of the Gujarat HC on October 27 had expressed its anguish following a report by the Gujarat State Legal Services Authority, wherein the latter had concluded that stray cattle continue to be rampant on Ahmedabad roads.
The AMC, in an affidavit filed by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mihir Patel on November 6, submitted that between September 1 and November 5, 2023, nearly 6,700 cattle have been impounded compared to 2,632 cattle that were impounded by the civic body between July and August 2023.
The AMC submitted that cattle owners who do not have the facilities to maintain their cattle herds within the city limits, specifically land for such cattle, are being “motivated to move their herds outside the city”.
In the past 10 days, the AMC said, a total of 13 FIRs have been registered in connection with altercations between cattle owners and AMC personnel.
