An old bridge collapsed in the Vastadi area of Gujarat’s Surendranagar district on Sunday, resulting in multiple vehicles, including a dumper and motorcycles, plunging into the river below.
According to initial reports, at least 10 people were swept away in the incident, and four people have been rescued. The search for the remaining six people was underway.
Police and government officials rushed to the scene, and the injured rescued individuals were transferred to nearby hospitals.
According to District Collector KC Sampath, the bridge over Bhogavo river, connecting the National Highway to the Chura tehsil, was a 40-year-old structure. The authorities had restricted access to the bridge for heavy vehicles.
It appears that the bridge collapsed after a dumper tried to pass over it.
The bridge has already been handed over to the Roads and Buildings Department, and approval has also been given to build a new structure, the Collector added.
