Ahmedabad crime branch arrested a tea stall worker, for the murder of 35-year-old Anita Vaghela at the Swapnil Arcade commercial complex in Naroda on the morning of July 19. Vaghela worked at the complex as a sweeper
Arvind tried to rape Vaghela, when she resisted, he killed her. Investigators claim that he wanted to prove that he was not impotent, as his friends had been teasing him ever since he had an accident.
Doctors said her body bore no marks of sexual assault. Naroda police had registered a case of murder against unidentified persons after Anita was reported missing on the morning of July 18. Her body was found the next day.
The crime branch found that on the day of the killing, there was a power cut for maintenance and the CCTV system in the building was thus not working.
Crime branch got to suspect Arvind as he would often stay the night with a security guard at Swapnil Arcade, Shailesh Dantani. Police first took a semen sample from Arvind. He was detained and questioned and confessed to having murdered Anita.
Arvind told police that he worked at his mother’s tea stall in the morning and at night would stay with Dantani at Swapnil Arcade in Naroda, along with a rickshaw driver named Dixit Shah and one Bharat Thakore, a labourer. Arvind said that as he had suffered an injury to his private parts, Dantani, Shah and Thakore would tease him saying he was impotent.
He then resolved to have sex with a woman. On July 17, he waited for Anita on the second floor where she usually came to fill water. He then locked the door of the room and approached her. As she began screaming, he hit her on the head with an iron rod, killing her. He then locked the room and disposed of her body in the parking area.
