Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) has once again proven its commitment towards excellence by winning three awards in the Par Excellence category at the 9th National Conclave on ‘5S’ by Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI), where different organizations presented a total of 145 case studies for 5S practices. Ahmedabad Airport emerged as a winner in three categories with its implemented Workplace Management System.
SVPIA implemented 5S, a proven Japanese system for organizing spaces leading to all employees working at the workplace and performing efficiently, effectively, and safely. The storage and retrieval system are methodical and provides tremendous ease for custodians while avoiding wastage & obsolescence. The term 5S comes from five Japanese words: Seiri (Reorganization), Seiton (Neatness), Seiso (Cleanliness), Seiketsu (Standardization), and Shitsuke (Discipline).
The three case studies presented by SVPIA were from Engineering and Maintenance Areas, where the teams implemented the 5s Workplace Management System at the airport. The areas were – STP (Sewage Treatment plant), Terminal 2 – Pump house, and T1 – Switch room. These implementations reduced unsafe incidents, improved equipment availability and reliability, improved customer experience, space-saving, and reduced retrieval time.
