An 88-year-old man living in an old-age home in Pethapur area of Gandhinagar committed suicide by jumping into the Sabarmati from the riverfront walkway beneath the Ellis Bridge.
He had been suffering from prostate-related ailment for the past 10 years. According to Sabarmati Riverfront (West) police, Suryakant Shah had moved to the old-age home in Pethapur two years ago.
Due to domestic issues, his family sent him to an old age home in Pethapur,” Suryakant told the staff at the old-age home that his son was coming to take him home.
After some time, he left the old age home and went to the riverfront. A security guard at the riverfront spotted him near the walkway trying to scale the metal grilles.
However, before the guard could stop him, Suryakant jumped into the river. The fire brigade personnel fished out his body and the police informed his family members.
