The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized liquid gold worth Rs 49 lakh from two passengers, including a woman arriving at Surat airport from a Sharjah flight. The passengers were carrying gold in their rectums.
Both people are being questioned by the DRI, which has reason to believe that they may have brought gold in the past as well. Officials set up monitoring at the airport after the DRI received information about these two people bringing gold on a Shahjaha flight. After detailed questioning of Imtiaz and Yasmin upon their arrival, officials learned that they had been hiding 800 grams of liquid gold in their rectums. Notably, the Special Operations Group (SOG) had already discovered gold worth Rs. 4.5 crore outside the airport. The male is from Surat, and the woman lives in Navsari.
Carriers frequently fly from Surat to Dubai and vice versa with gold valued at less than one crore to avoid being arrested if caught by DRI or Customs officials. According to the rules, arrests are normally only conducted when the gold is worth more than one crore. Both accused parties in the current instance had brought gold in capsule form. After a quick investigation, the DRI turned them over to Customs. However, Customs also freed them after interrogation.
