The day before Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat, Kutch experienced a 3.5 magnitude earthquake. The epicentre of the earthquake, according to the Gandhinagar Institute of Seismological Research, was located 5 kilometres west-southwest of Bhachau in the Kutch region. On Wednesday, at 5:05 p.m. a 3.5-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Kutch struck 5 kilometres west-southwest of Bhachau.
The centre of the earthquake was located at latitude of 23.291 and a longitude of 70.293, with a depth of 18.5 km, according to the Gujarat government’s Institute of Seismological Research.
This recent earthquake occurred barely weeks after the last seismic event in Kutch, which occurred in May 2023. The preceding quake, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, occurred near the India-Pakistan border in the Khavda district of Kutch.
On Wednesday, the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts of Gujarat received a Cyclone Biparjoy warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On June 15, it is anticipated to move almost northeastward by the evening and pass through Saurashtra and Kutch as well as the nearby Pakistani beaches between Mandvi, Gujarat, and Karachi, Pakistan, close to Jakhau Port, Gujarat.
In the wake of the cyclone, the BSF evacuated residents from villages in the coastal districts of Kutch at its Border Outpost earlier on Wednesday. Ravi Gandhi, the Inspector General of Border Security Force for Gujarat, travelled to the coastal areas of Bhuj to examine the mitigation efforts being made to lessen the destructive effects of the cyclone and to gauge readiness for any eventuality.
