Four persons attempted suicide by consuming phenyl in a courtroom of the Gujarat high court in protest of court’s order of granting anticipatory bail to a banker.
Four persons were identified as Jayshree Panchal and her husband Shailesh Panchal, Hardik Patel and Manoj Vaishnav. They were rushed to the nearby Sola Civil Hospital, where their condition was declared out of danger and they were in conscious state, the emergency medical service said in a statement.
The Panchals were complainants in a case of alleged cheating and bank fraud involving four persons including the general manager of Colour Merchant Cooperative Bank, Kinnar Shah. He was accused of extending Rs 1.60 crore of loan by mortgaging a house belonging to the Panchals without their knowledge. The FIR was registered with Anandnagar police station on January 13.
Shah had sought anticipatory bail in this case and Justice Nirzar Desai granted him the relief. As soon as the judge completed dictation of the order and the lawyers involved in the case began to disperse, Jayshree, who was sitting in the second row during the hearing, got up, shouted to protest the court’s decision. She raised a bottle and began drinking from it. Three others followed the suit. The police personnel rushed into the courtroom and tried to prevent Jayshree and others from consuming more liquid. The incident was captured on camera during the live-streaming of the court proceeding.
