In the Dahod district of the state, a group of men—among them her estranged husband—raped, beat, and thrashed a woman in full view of the public. The incident occurred on May 28 and the police detained the four men on Wednesday as a result of a viral video of the same.
The woman’s estranged husband was reportedly upset that she had been cohabitating with another man for the previous 1.5 years while living apart from him and their four children. He therefore abducted her from Rampura village in the district where she lived along with three other men. She was taken to Margala village where she was beaten.
According to police officials, the woman belonged to a tribal community and had been living separately from her husband and four children. She had been residing with another man at Chanasma in Mehsana district, where they both worked as daily labourers. The man’s mother had invited them and the woman’s estranged husband to attend a wedding at Rampura village. The accused reached the spot in a four-wheeler along with a group of men, kidnapped the woman and her partner, and took them to Margala village, where they stripped the woman and thrashed her in public view.
A villager recorded the incident on camera and posted it to social media, where it quickly gained popularity and prompted the police to intervene. In the video, her estranged husband can be seen dancing while the woman is being attacked by a group of men. The villagers declined to assist the woman in favour of simply watching. According to the police officials, a thorough investigation into the incident is currently in progress.
