Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam, a compound mixed team from India, continued their unbeaten streak on Saturday by shocking the world’s best team, Korea, to win their second straight World Cup gold.
The pair continued to play well together after winning the World Cup Stage 1 gold in Antalya last month, and they shot calmly to defeat the top-seeded Korean team 156-155.
In each of the first three ends, the experienced Korean pair of Kim Jongho and Oh Yoohyun and the Indian team both shot identical 39s out of 40.
The Koreans faltered in the decisive end as Deotale and Jyothi once more produced a 39 to clinch their second consecutive World Cup gold medal.
Jyothi, who was eliminated early from the individual competition, had a flawless start to the final while her 20-year-old partner struggled to get a perfect 10.
Ojas, however, complemented Jyothi well and performed at his peak when she missed the 10-point mark a few times because the two had the best possible chemistry.
Locked 117-117 heading into the final end, Jyothi shot a 10 with her final arrow, while a measurement was needed on Oh Yoohyun’s final arrow to confirm the Indians’ victory.
“Throughout the World Cup, our co-ordination and shooting process were very good. And in the final too, we focused on our shooting process,” Jyothi said.
“World Championships are the most important event for us. And winning the gold medals is a big boost to our confidence. We look to continue the momentum,” she added.
