Gujrat High Court order in 2012 held that Ayurveda practitioners are to be treated at par with MBBS degree holders. The Supreme Court over-ruled this order stating that though Ayurveda is an ancient practice in our country, the tasks performed by Ayurveda practitioners are nowhere equal to those performed by MBBS doctors.
MBBS doctors in General Hospitals attend to hundreds of patients in OPD as compared to ayurveda doctors. AYUSH doctors are not competent to perform post-mortem, neither aware of advancement in medical science nor capable in assisting surgeons during surgical procedures said a bench comprising of Justice Pankaj Mitthal and Justice V. Ramasubramanian.
Hence Ayurveda practitioners are not entitled to equal pay as MBBS doctors.
