Eighteen women from Sudan and an Indian woman were arrested at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai for smuggling 16.36 kg of gold. The total cost of the gold is estimated to be Rs 10.16 crore. The women were held based on information received from the Intelligence Section of the Revenue Department.
The information about smuggling gold through passengers’ syndicate was received on April 24. The flight coming from UAE was under surveillance. The team of DRI stopped 18 women and recovered 16.36 kg of gold paste, pieces of gold and ornaments from their possession. An Indian woman, who was coordinating with the passengers, was also arrested. Most of the gold was concealed in their body. Detection was very difficult for the DRI team, an officer said.
