Suman Kumari, 24, was identified as the Bhojpuri actress who was detained following a raid by the Mumbai Police’s Social Service Branch on Friday night.
An officer claimed that they had learned of a prostitution ring that was “supplying models for prostitution” out of the Royal Palm Hotel in Goregaon. The hotel was raided by a group.
Police rescued the three women and detained Suman Kumari. “Kumari would supply models to people. These women who had come to the city to make a career in films had fallen on hard times and were in need of money to maintain their lifestyle,” an officer said. Kumari has acted in Bhojpuri films like ‘Laila Majnu’ and ‘Baap Numbari, Beta Dus Numbari’. She has also featured in songs in various languages including Hindi, Punjabi and Bhojpuri, the officer added.
Sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA) have been the subject of a filed report (FIR). Officials declared that she would be arrested. Police are searching for a second suspect, a man who is said to have served as the intermediary between Kumari and her clients.
