On Wednesday morning in Chandkheda, a woman who had just given birth threw her newborn baby boy out of the bathroom window of her ninth-floor apartment.
To cover up an illicit relationship she was having with a male friend, the woman carried out the horrifying murder.
Sheela Jani (name changed), a woman in her mid- to late-20s, told Chandkheda police that she had no idea she was pregnant and that her heavy menstrual bleeding was caused by a delayed period. She threw the newborn from the bathroom window after giving birth to a boy because she was terrified. When neighbours heard a thud at around 8 am and discovered an infant with blood all over the place, they called the police. The baby passed away on the spot.
Sheela, an M.com. graduate working for a private company, allegedly had an affair with a male friend, according to Chandkheda police. She was living with her parents in Chandkheda’s Sky Walk Apartment after divorcing her husband. Her sister and brother lived with her in addition to her parents.
“She had an affair which she hid from her parents. She told us that she did not realise she was pregnant and did not reveal the name of her male friend,” said a cop investigating the matter.
Police are trying to find out if the male friend was married and whether he had put pressure on her to get rid of the infant. However, sources said cops already have the name of the friend. “If we find that he put pressure on her to kill the newborn we will book him for murder too,” said the cop.
Sheela was booked for murder under IPC section 302 and killing and concealing of a newborn child (IPC 318).
It took the cops some time to zero in on Sheela after they first came to know of the murder. Cops questioned several residents of Sky Walk Apartments before they nabbed Sheela.
“We have sent her for a medical examination. DNA profiling will be done to know the parents of the newborn. We are yet to question Sheela’s parents and siblings but suspect that they were ignorant of her pregnancy. We will question other family members too,” said a cop.
Sheela will be sent to a counsellor, the police said, as they believe she is remorseless. The woman claimed to the police that she had never before been pregnant and had no idea that she was carrying a child. She had no children from her first marriage.
