A 21-year-old woman’s life was saved thanks to an alert police officer who stopped her and called up his superior officer. Following a sympathetic ear from a female constable and counselling from the 181 Abhayam team, the young woman agreed to return home.
Mohan Ishwarbhai, a traffic constable stationed beneath the Dadhichi bridge, noticed a woman about to jump into the river from the walkway around 11:15 a.m.
Traffic ACP SJ Modi stated that he and his team were patrolling the area when they received the call, so he asked female constable Jaya Mulchandbhai to accompany them to the scene. The female constable approached the young woman, who stated that she was depressed, did not want to return home, and wished to end her life.
After speaking to her and convincing her not to take the drastic step, the police team took her away from the Riverfront and sought help from the Abhayam Helpline team.
Abhayam Regional Coordinator Falguni Patel said, “The 21-year-old woman is suffering from mental illness and has been on treatment for some time. However, she said she was depressed. We counselled her and her parents as well. She then agreed to go home with them.”
