The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) foiled two families’ attempts to smuggle more than 5 kg of gold into the country from the UAE via the SVPI Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
DRI sleuths learned that three passengers on SpiceJet flight SG-16 from Dubai to Ahmedabad were attempting to smuggle foreign-origin gold.
DRI officials intercepted the trio — a man and two women — on Tuesday based on the intelligence. During the examination, approximately 5,088 gm of gold paste was discovered hidden inside false cavities made in the waist area and bottom hem of the passengers’ trousers. The gold is valued at Rs2.61 crore. Gold was discovered hidden in jeans and diapers. All three were apprehended.
