Silver and imitation jewellery worth Rs 3.88 crore were robbed on the Rajkot-Ahmedabad highway. A gang of robbers stole silver and imitation jewellery worth Rs 3.88 crore from a courier company’s delivery van after assaulting the driver in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district, a police official said on Saturday.
According to Superintendent of Police Haresh Dudhat, the robbers arrived in three cars and intercepted the van near Sayla town on the Rajkot-Ahmedabad highway on Friday night.
“The assailants fled in their vehicles after stealing jewellery worth Rs 3.88 crore. “We have formed 15 teams to track down the perpetrators,” Dudhat said.
According to a representative of the Rajkot-based courier company, the jewellery shipment was being delivered to the Ahmedabad airport for further distribution to other cities across the country.
“Every day, our van delivers valuables to Ahmedabad airport from Rajkot. On Friday night, the van driver called us from someone else’s phone and told us that some people had looted jewellery parcels after thrashing him. “The parcels belonged to nearly 50 traders and jewellers,” said Pintu Singh, manager of the courier company.
