The construction of the new RTO building at Subhash bridge, for which the CM laid the foundation stone on November 19, 2021, is moving at a snail’s pace.
The fast-tracked building has already missed its deadline by more than a month and is unlikely to be completed for another year. The urgency displayed during the inauguration is no longer visible.
According to an official, the ground plus three-storeyed building would be completed in 11 months. It had also taken a long time to demolish the old building. Work on the new building had later come to a halt during Covid and for several months after the two-year epidemic.
Manish Bhatt, an executive engineer of the Roads and Building department, refused to comment on the project or its delay.
The building design was similar to the Ahmedabad airport, said the officials.
The fully air-conditioned main building, with a built-up area of 5,000 square meters, was to have a dome with seating for 500 people and a large parking area.
The new structure was supposed to have three tracks for four-wheelers and two-wheelers.
Given the construction pace, it appears that the RTO will have to operate from rented premises for an extended period of time.
