Two police officers have been suspended, and a departmental inquiry has been ordered, for beating two youths in the Udhna area of Surat city on December 31 night.
Udhna Police Inspector H.S. Acharya told the media that the two were arrested as soon as CCTV footage was available to the police.
The CCTV footage, which went viral on morning, January 1, in Surat, shows two police officers dragging and beating two youths on the road. The youths claim that when the police demanded Rs 5,000, they took away their ATM cards and forcibly withdrew money.
Police have denied these allegations, claiming that two youths were in an auto-rickshaw when the Police Control Room (PCR) van intercepted it and attempted to question them before fleeing.
Ajay Tomar, the police commissioner, suspended both head constable Piyush Chaudhary and constable Ashok Chaudhary.
