Surat court on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the murder of his 8-month-old daughter. The man was fined Rs 25,000.
Irked by the baby’s cries, Ovesh Hasna Shaikh punched her in the chest and smashed her on the floor, killing her on the spot.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on May 11, 2020, while Shaikh, a resident of Salabatpura in Surat, was sleeping. When his daughter Aayan alias Aayat began to cry, Shaikh awoke and screamed at his wife. An enraged Shaikh then punched the infant in the chest and stomach and threw her to the ground, killing her instantly.
In her deposition, Shaikh’s wife Amrin stated that she was busy with household chores when her husband awoke and began shouting. She testified in court that her husband began hitting their child before she could save it.
Shaikh later threatened Amrin to remain silent on the matter. The hospital declared the baby to be dead.
A doctor also testified that the child’s injuries caused a fatal haemorrhage. This was confirmed by the postmortem report.
