The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has earned the highest level 4+ Transition of Airport Carbon Accreditation programme of the Airport Council International, joining only 31 other airports worldwide, an official announced on Thursday. Stefano Baronci, director-general of ACI AsiaPacific, praised the CSMIA for its “remarkable achievements” in lowering carbon emissions and serving as a model for other airports in the region.
The CSMIA has created a thorough roadmap for carbon management that includes plans and investments for projects to reduce emissions and energy consumption, a green procurement policy for environmentally friendly and less-polluting and services and materials, etc.
It has implemented 100 percent green energy sources, 4.65 MW on-site renewable power generation plant, six electric vehicle charging stations, plastic waste management and numerous other eco-friendly initiatives both inside and outside the airport. Unique vertical axis wind turbines and solar PV systems with a capacity of 10 KWp were installed this year, and four more will be installed next year.
