Shankar Chaudhary, senior legislator of BJP from the Gujarat district of Banaskantha’s Tharad constituency was unanimously chosen to serve as Speaker of the 15th Gujarat Assembly. The BJP MLA from the Sehra district, Jetha Ahir (Bharwad) was appointed as deputy speaker of the house without opposition.
No party objected to the Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s proposal to name Chaudhary as Speaker of the House.
The CM’s proposal was backed by senior minister Rushikesh Patel. During the voice vote to pass the proposal, Congress legislator Shailesh Parmar said to pass the proposal unanimously.
Senior minister Kanu Desai and Rushikesh Patel, proposed the appointment of Ahir as the Deputy Speaker. The proposal was approved without any opposition after being put to a voice vote.
BJP won 156 of the 182 seats in the recently held Assembly elections registering a resounding victory. As a result, the House is convening for the first time. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won five seats, while the Congress could win 17 seats. Additionally, three independents were chosen to serve in the Assembly.
