JEE Advanced 2023: IITs to Take Class 12 Performance Criteria for Enrollment to BTech Courses

From the upcoming academic year, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to change the admission criteria and consider class 12 marks in addition to JEE Advanced scores. Prior to the pandemic, class 12 performance was considered for admission to IITs, and it is expected to return in the upcoming academic year.

After several central and state boards were forced to cancel board exams due to the Covid-19 imposed lockdown, the IITs relaxed the requirements for candidates’ performance in board exams 2020 and 2021.

Due to the return of final board exams in the current academic year, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to discontinue the relaxation of admission based on performance on the class 12 board exam. During a meeting last month, it was decided to reintroduce the class 12 performance criteria.

Candidates who passed their class 12 board examination or are currently enrolled in a programme that includes physics and mathematics as mandatory subjects along with chemistry and biology are eligible to appear JEE Main 2023. Every year, top 2.5 lakh JEE Main students are allowed to sit for JEE Advanced.

There is no upper age limit for candidates appearing JEE Main. Candidates who passed the class 12 or equivalent examination in 2021, 2022 or are appearing in 2023, regardless of age are eligible to appear JEE Main 2022 examination. However, Candidates may be required to meet the age requirements of the institutes to which they wish to apply.

Meanwhile, JEE Main 2023 session 1 will take place in January, followed by session 2 in April. According to rules, the best marks obtained by candidates in either of two sessions will be used to calculate ranks. Students can choose to attend one or both sessions. By March, the application forms for the second session will be available.
