An engineering dropout from Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district has been arrested by Gujarat’s Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), which is looking into a potentially lethal e-mail sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year. The suspect, in his twenties, was apprehended by the ATS on Saturday from a house in Budaun’s Adarsh Nagar neighbourhood under the jurisdiction of the Civil Lines police station.
The man has not been arrested but picked up for interrogation in connection with the case. He was pursuing an engineering degree from a Bareilly-based college but left it midway. His neighbours have also expressed suspicion over his activities as he had been involved in thefts of laptops and other electronic gadgets in the past, said inspector Sahsarveer Singh, Civil Lines police station.
The cop added, “Locals told us that no one knew where he went and when he returns home. Even his family members have disowned him due to his nefarious activities.”
According to the ATS, a youth and a young woman were involved in sending the threatening e-mail to the PM. The suspect may have used a stolen laptop to send the e-mail, said officials.
