On Friday, a 27-year-old former Central University of Gujarat student hanged himself in his brother’s hostel dorm in Gandhinagar Sector 30. Sachin Chauhan, the deceased, was staying with his cousin at the university’s hostel and had recently filled out a PhD application form. According to police, one of the reasons for the extreme action could be a love affair.
According to Gandhinagar Sector 21 PI M B Bharwad, “Sachin Chauhan was a former CUG student who was staying with his cousin. He is from Sadhunagar, Haryana. The suicide is being investigated.”
Sachin received his MA with English major from CUG in September 2021. According to varsity officials, he was awarded a degree during recently held annual convocation. He wanted to do PhD since he finished his Master’s degree, but despite applying to several institutes, he was denied admission.
“He failed in his attempt to clear NET and at PhD entrance exams last year. In his second attempt at NET, he was disqualified by just a margin of a couple of marks. He was at CUG because he wanted to pursue PhD and that is why he was staying in the CUG hostel room. When one of the students who went to fetch banners from the room, he realized that Sachin attempted suicide. A doctor who came over shortly declared him dead,” said a student.
Registrar at CUG H B Patel told Mirror that the student was disciplined and academically good when he studied at the university. “Police have also told us that there seems to be a possible love angle to the unfortunate incident. He was trying to get a PhD here after he did not make it to the other institutes last year. We are providing all details sought by the police,” said Patel.
