A Superintendent of CGST in Gujarat’s Gandhidham has been detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation on suspicion of soliciting and taking a Rs 1 lakh bribe.
S Maheshwari, Superintendent, CGST (Audit), has been named as the accused.
A case was filed on the basis of allegations that he demanded Rs 2.40 lakh in bribes from the complainant for containers cleared during his previous posting as Superintendent, Customs, Kandla Port.
It was also claimed that the accused advised the complainant to pay the amount in order to avoid the audit that he had threatened to conduct.
The CBI then set a trap for Maheshwari, who demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from the complainant. The CBI said that searches were conducted at the accused’s office and residential premises, which resulted in the recovery of Rs 6.50 lakh and incriminating documents.
