Danushka Gunathilaka, a tainted Sri Lanka cricketer, was granted bail in Sydney, reversing an earlier decision in the case of an alleged sexual assault on a woman during his national team’s tour of Australia for the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2022 edition. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the batter, who has been suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) with immediate effect following the serious charges, appeared in Sydney’s Downing Centre court via video link from Parklea Correctional Centre, where he has remained in custody since being denied bail earlier this month.
It should be noted that Gunathilaka has been charged with four counts of unconsented sexual intercourse with a woman he met through a dating app in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. While he has been granted bail, the 31-year-old is not permitted to use any of his existing social media or dating profiles after his release. Furthermore, because his passport has been surrendered, he will be unable to leave Australia.
