PM Narendra Modi, who is touring election-bound Gujarat, has decided to cancel his roadshow in Ahmedabad in the wake of the tragic Morbi bridge incident in which 132 people were killed
PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased person’s family. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, he also spoke with the CM and other officials and requested the immediate mobilisation of rescue teams (PMO).
“The Page Committee Sneh Milan programme, which was to be held in the virtual presence of Prime Minister Modi, has been postponed,” said the BJP Gujarat media cell. BJP Gujarat media convenor Dr. Yagnesh Dave said there will be no celebrations on Monday in the aftermath of the Morbi tragedy, in which many people are believed to have died, including women, children, and the elderly.
Expressing his grief, PM Modi said “I am in Ekta Nagar, but my mind is with the victims of Morbi. Rarely, in my life, would I have experienced such pain. On one hand, there is a pain-riddled heart and on the other hand, there is the path to duty,” he said while
The Prime Minister was addressing people at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat’s Kevadia where he paid floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary.
“I express my condolences to families of those who lost their lives in the accident. In this hour of grief, the government is with the bereaved families in every manner,” he added.
The PM said a committee has also been set up to probe the accident.
In an appeal to the people to unite during this tragic time, he said we should be inspired by Sardar Patel, who carried out his work despite opposition from all sides.
