Plans are being developed to expand the approach road, build multi-level parking, and create an arrival plaza for passengers’ relatives, in light of the anticipated increase in passenger traffic at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
An airport official said, “New airlines have started offering services on new sectors from the Ahmedabad airport and passenger traffic has increased to 28,000 per day. This has also increased the vehicular traffic. Development of new infrastructure and expansion of existing infrastructure has been planned considering these aspects.”
He added, “Compared to international terminal, the rush is higher at the domestic terminal. It is to be noted that both the terminals currently have single lane roads; therefore, passengers face traffic jams and delays during peak hours.”
A three-lane approach and exit road has been built outside the domestic terminal, and another is being built outside the international terminal and will be completed in two months.
An arrival plaza is being constructed at the domestic terminal where relatives who came to receive the passengers can rest while waiting.
Along with this, separate lanes have been developed for private vehicles, taxis and drop off lanes outside the domestic terminal. The parking facility which has an existing capacity of 250 vehicles will be expanded to 400 vehicles.
A plan is awaiting approval to construct an international level multilevel parking opposite the international terminal.
