Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of the Ahmedabad Metro, which includes East-West and North-South corridors, on September 30. However, commercial operations on the 40.03-kilometer East-West Corridor began only on October 2.
The East-West Corridor (total length 21.16 kilometres) between Vastral Gam and Thaltej Gam has been partially operational since March 2019, when Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a 6.5-kilometer stretch of the corridor between Vastral Gam and Apparel Park.
The East-West Corridor’s 20-odd kilometres became operational on September 30. A 1.4-kilometer stretch between Thaltej and Thaltej Gam, on the other hand, is still under construction and is expected to be completed by March 2023. Similarly, the Kankaria East underground railway station is still under construction, and trains running along this corridor bypass it.
The launch dates of the two corridors were kept separate to avoid the initial rush of customers wishing to use the Metro. On the first day of Metro operations on the East-West corridor, 41,700 people rode. A ticket costs between Rs 5 and Rs 25. GMRC operated 72 trips on October 2.
