The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad will receive a new semi-automated cargo terminal in 2023.
The new terminal will be located on the airport campus in the city, directly across from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The construction of the upcoming terminal has already begun, and according to the airport operator, phase one of the project is expected to be completed by June 2023.
According to data, approximately 1.15 lakh tonnes of cargo were processed at SVPI airport in 2019. The new facility (terminal), with a total built-up area of 33,000 square metres, will be able to handle future cargo volume increases.
The first phase of the terminal is expected to cover 21,000 square metres of the total 33,000 square metres.
The new cargo terminal, which can handle approximately 100 tonnes of cargo per day, was inaugurated earlier this year in April.
Previously used as a dedicated Haj terminal, the terminal has now been converted into a cargo terminal.
The upcoming terminal will also be a greenfield project, capable of handling domestic cargo, international cargo, express courier, cold-chain pharmaceuticals, and other perishable cargo.
