Legendary Indian hockey player Varinder Singh, an Olympic and world championships medalist, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, in Jalandhar. The legend of hockey was 75.
Varinder Singh was a member of India’s bronze-medal winning men’s hockey team at the 1972 Munich Olympics. In the 1970s, he was an important member of India’s dominant hockey team.
Hockey India condoled Varinder Singh’s passing away and said the legendary player’s achievements will be remembered worldwide.
Among his stupendous achievements include a Gold medal at the 1975 Men’s Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This remains India’s only Gold medal at the prestigious World Cup where India has beaten nemesis Pakistan 2-1.
He also had to his credit a silver medal at the 1974 and 1978 Asian Games, respectively. The Indian hockey stalwart also featured in the 1975 Montreal Olympics.
In 2007, Varinder was conferred with the prestigious Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award.
