The number of Covid-19 cases in Gujarat doubled in a single day on Wednesday, with Ahmedabad contributing the most.
Gujarat reported 407 new Covid cases, twice the number compared to the 226 reported on June 21. This is the highest number of cases reported in June, which is being called the “fourth Covid-19 wave” as cases continue to skyrocket across the country.
Despite the fact that officials say those with recent travel history account for only 25 percent of cases in the city, indicating a spread of cases throughout the community.
Ahmedabad city reported 207 new Covid cases against the 106 cases reported on Tuesday. The one-day spike in the cases in Ahmedabad city, where cases double in conjunction with the state, made it the largest contributing factor to the Gujarat Covid caseload on Wednesday.
While testing has slightly increased in Ahmedabad, the number of cases has increased disproportionately, according to officials. Currently, the western region of the city is home to the majority of the newly reported cases.
Dr Bhavin Solanki, Medical Officer of Health (MoH) at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said, “While they are just short of being called clusters, there is a concentration of cases in areas like Navrangpura, Thaltej, Bodakdev and Paldi. About 25% of all who are testing positive have some sort of travel history while others contracted in the community here itself. There aren’t many cases coming positive from the railway station and airport.”
Surat city reported 45 new cases, Vadodara city reported 39 new cases, while Rajkot city went up to 17 on Wednesday and Gandhinagar city repoted 7 new cases.
However, 17 districts in Gujarat reported no cases at all.
