Employees and officers of public sector banks have threatened to go on strike on June 27 to protest for issues related to pensions and the demand for five-days-a-week work.
The Maha Gujarat Bank Employees Association (MGBEA) alleged that the Indian Bank Association (IBA) has failed to resolve issues affecting bank employees and officers.
In Gujarat, 70,000 bank employees and officers will participate in the strike. Banking operation may be impacted if the strike materalises.
The United Forum of Bank Union (UFBU), an umbrella body of nine bank unions including All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW), decided to go on strike.
Soumya Dutta, the General Secretary of the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), said that if the government and bank management do not respond to the unions’ demands, about 7 lakh workers across the country will join the strike.
Their demands included updation and revision of pension for all pensioners and doing away with the national pension scheme and restore old pension scheme for all bank employees, AIBEA general secretary C H Venkatachalam said after the meeting of United Forum of Bank Union (UFBU).
