The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has finally recognised the need to increase the city’s green cover and will launch a tree planting drive during the upcoming monsoon season.
The civic body plans to plant a total of 21 lakh trees across the city, with 11 lakh trees planted in a two lakh square metre area during the monsoon.
The AMC plans to increase Ahmedabad’s green cover from the existing 12%. It is part of the civic body’s mission million tree drive.
On June 5, World Environment Day, the AMC will plant the trees near Ambedkar Bridge at the Sabarmati Riverfront (East) in a collaboration with the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation.
The municipal government will plant 75 banyan trees using the Miyawaki method. On the same day, a similar drive will be held at the Ambli government plot on Sindhu Bhavan Road as part of the green constituency, Gandhinagar constituency scheme.
